How to Find Your Curl Type (2A to 4C Explained)

The Curl Typing System Explained

The curl typing system most people use today was developed by hairstylist Andre Walker. It runs from Type 1 (straight) through Type 4 (coily), with A, B, and C subcategories based on pattern tightness. Type 2 covers wavy hair, Type 3 covers curly, and Type 4 covers coily and kinky textures.

How to Identify Your Type

To find your true curl type, wash your hair with no product and let it air dry completely without touching. The pattern that forms naturally is your true curl type. Loose flat S-waves are Type 2A-B. Springier S-waves roughly pen-width in size are 2C-3A. Corkscrew spirals the width of a marker are 3B. Tight coils the width of a pencil are 3C-4A. Very tight zig-zag patterns are 4B-4C.

Why Mixed Types Are Common

Most people have at least two curl types on their head. The crown is often looser, the nape and sides often tighter. Section your hair and adjust moisture levels accordingly rather than using one product weight for the entire head.

Beyond Curl Type: Porosity Matters

Knowing your curl type tells you your curl shape. Knowing your porosity tells you how to hydrate it. A 3B low-porosity head and a 3B high-porosity head need completely different products and techniques.
