The High Porosity Challenge
High porosity hair has a raised, damaged, or naturally open cuticle layer. It absorbs moisture rapidly but loses it just as fast, often feeling dry within hours of washing. High porosity can be genetic, or caused by colour treatments, bleaching, heat damage, and chemical processing. The challenge is not getting moisture in but keeping it there.
The Protein Connection
High porosity hair almost always benefits from regular protein treatments. Damaged or open cuticle scales leave gaps in the hair shaft that cause structural weakness and make moisture retention difficult. Protein fills these gaps temporarily, strengthening the strand. Use a light protein treatment every 2-3 weeks and a more intensive treatment monthly if you have significant damage.
The LOC Method for High Porosity
The LOC method — Liquid, Oil, Cream — works by hydrating first with a water-based leave-in, then sealing with a lightweight oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, then finishing with a cream to seal the oil layer. The oil layer is the critical moisture-sealing step that prevents the rapid moisture loss high porosity hair is prone to.
Cold Water Rinse
Always finish your shower with cool or cold water. Cold water helps close the cuticle after conditioning, reducing moisture loss after stepping out of the shower. Small habit — real difference over weeks of consistent practice.
