Understanding 4C Hair
Type 4C hair has very tight, densely packed coils or zig-zag patterns with a small or sometimes no visible curl circumference. It is typically the most fragile curl type and the most prone to dryness. Shrinkage of 60-80% is entirely normal — hair at 10 inches of actual length may sit at 2 inches when dry. This is healthy hair behaving as it should, not a problem to fix.
Products That Consistently Work
For cleansing, TGIN Moisture Rich Sulfate-Free Shampoo or As I Am Coconut CoWash provides gentle moisturising cleansing. Wash in sections to prevent tangling. For weekly moisture, Shea Moisture JBCO Strengthen Grow and Restore Masque applied under heat deeply replenishes moisture levels. For definition, Camille Rose Curl Maker applied section by section using the shingling method on soaking wet hair gives maximum clumping.
Protective Styling for Length Retention
Protective styling — braids, twists, updos that tuck the ends away — is extremely beneficial for 4C hair. It reduces daily manipulation, retains length, and protects ends from dryness and breakage. Moisturise thoroughly before installing any protective style and never leave it in for more than six to eight weeks without refreshing scalp care and moisture.
