The LOC Method Explained: Is It Right for Your Curl Type?

What Is the LOC Method?

LOC stands for Liquid, Oil, Cream — the layering order of products applied after washing. The method works by hydrating with a liquid first, sealing moisture into the strand with an oil, then adding a cream or gel to seal the oil layer and provide definition. Each layer seals in the previous one, so moisture is locked in more effectively than single-product application across most curl types.

The LCO Variation

Some curl types respond better to LCO — Liquid, Cream, Oil — where the cream is applied before the oil. This tends to suit high porosity hair, where the cream helps fill cuticle gaps before the oil seals. Low porosity hair typically does better with LOC, as oil applied second in LCO can sit on the surface and block absorption rather than seal. Experiment with both and observe how your hair feels 24 hours after styling.

Choosing the Right Oil

For the O step in LOC, a sealing oil is ideal because its job is to lock in what came before it. Jojoba, mineral oil, and castor oil sit on the surface and seal moisture in. Use only a few drops — oil applied too heavily causes greasiness and product build-up within two to three days of a wash.
